Smaller Procedures Achieve Big Results
This article actually appeared in the January/February
2006 issue of Cosmetic Surgery Times. It was written by John Jesitus,
who was quoting Dr. Carraway. It has been edited here for our purposes.
Used in combination, minimally invasive lower-face procedures such
as botulinum toxin (botox), filler injections and fat grafts can achieve
impressive results while making plastic surgery accessible to more
patients. Such treatments have allowed patients who can’t afford
larger procedures or the associated downtime to benefit from cosmetic
surgery.
Lip Lift
Dr. Carraway sometimes performs a lip lift along with fat grafting.
Conversely, bulk reductions can help patients whose lips are too large
or have been over-injected with fat grafts (a problem which is increasingly
common). Liposuction has not performed well for bulk lip reduction
in his practice.
Fine–line treatment
To treat fine lines, Dr. Carraway prefers CosmoDerm to Restylane.
Other popular lower-face treatments in his practice include “TCA”
peels – this procedure achieves a 20% to 25% improvement in
fine wrinkles and sun damage.
Microdermabrasion
Dr. Carraway says that Vibraderm or salt peels all perform well for
microdermabrasion. He also recommends microdermabrasion creams that
patients can use at home. More intensive resurfacing treatments include
Faxel and ThermaCool. For patients desiring still more intensive treatments,
he recommends laser surface ablation or intense pulsed light (IPL),
either with or without aminolevulinic acid.
